Imphal, Oct. 9 – Manipur’s governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, met with railway officials to discuss the Jiribam‑Imphal rail line, a key project that will finally link the state’s capital with India’s national rail network.
During the high‑level meeting, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) gave a detailed rundown of the project’s progress. Leaders from the state’s chief secretariat, forests, police, and other departments joined the discussion. They reviewed the track alignment, tackled technical hurdles, and addressed security concerns.
The 111‑kilometre line will cut travel time between Jiribam (just across the Assam border) and Imphal, the state’s capital. Once finished, Imphal will join other northeastern capitals—Dispur, Agartala, Itanagar, and Aizawl—on the Indian Railways grid. This new connection is expected to:
- Boost tourism by making it easier for visitors to reach the region.
- Stimulate industrial growth and attract investment.
- Create jobs during construction and afterward.
- Reduce transportation costs for goods and passengers.
According to an NFR spokesperson, the project is over 95 % complete and is already delivering wide‑ranging benefits. The route includes 11 major bridges, 137 minor bridges, and 61.32 km of tunnels—showing the engineering challenge and the dedication of the railway team.
State officials say the rail link will be a catalyst for economic prosperity and stronger ties with the rest of India. By making trade and travel more efficient, the line will open new opportunities for goods, services, and people in northeast India.
With federal support and the NFR’s strong progress, the Jiribam‑Imphal railway is on track to finish next year, marking a historic step for Manipur’s development and connectivity.
