Furious anti-ICE protesters threw snowballs at feds to protect Chicago Tren de Argua gangbanger, DHS says
A man called Luis Jesus Acosta Gutierrez, who authorities say is linked to the Tren de Aragua gang, was taken in by ICE after a chaotic scene on a snowy street in Elgin, Illinois. The Department of Homeland Security reported that the man had walked into a police car and smashed it into a federal van, which was then crashed into a tree.
After the hit‑and‑run, he fled on foot and hid in a stranger’s apartment. When ICE agents tried to persuade him to leave, a large crowd of anti‑ICE protesters gathered outside and began hurling rocks, bottles and snowballs at the federal officers. The “Elgin Police Department” posted a statement on Facebook later, saying it would keep responding to calls but could not assist with federal immigration enforcement under the Illinois Trust Act.
After several hours of negotiation, Gutierrez was finally arrested. This isn’t his first brush with U.S. authorities; he was intercepted at the border in April 2023 and released by the Biden administration, which also granted him Temporary Protective Status (TPS). DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin remarked that “This suspected TdA gang member was not only released into our country by the Biden administration but also granted Temporary Protected Status,” criticizing the administration’s vetting process. His TPS was revoked last month, and he is now facing deportation proceedings.
