Former Brazilian Ambassador highlights India’s role ahead of COP30

Brazil’s top climate official, Andre Aranha Correa do Lago—who’s set to lead COP30 and once served as ambassador to India—says India plays a vital role in worldwide climate talks. He points out how India stands out as a tech and industrial powerhouse that’s still growing as a developing nation.
In a chat with , Correa do Lago called India one of the biggest players at the Conference of the Parties, or COP. “India represents a country that’s one of the most advanced technologically and industrially,” he said. At the same time, he added, India faces the same hurdles as Brazil: delivering growth that lifts people out of poverty while tackling climate change head-on.
“India and Brazil have a very strong thing in common,” he explained. “When we think of climate, we have to think of development, the expectations of our populations, and how we deliver growth that’s climate-smart but also creates jobs and improves lives.”
The diplomat gave a shoutout to India’s solid dedication to global climate efforts, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. “India’s commitment to the UNFCCC and Paris Accord is very strong—shown by its push to chair COP33,” he told .
He also shared excitement about teaming up with India. “We’re very happy and coordinating closely. We have great experience working together,” Correa do Lago said.
Looking ahead, COP30—the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference—will happen in Belem, Brazil, from November 10 to 21. It’s the latest big gathering under the UNFCCC to push forward on global climate action, especially for countries like India and Brazil balancing development and sustainability.
