FDNY lieutenant, whose dad died on 9/11, delivers emotional message to US Ryder Cup team

As the sun rose over Bethpage Black Course on a crisp Monday morning, U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley gathered his 12 players and their caddies at the first tee. They geared up for their first official practice rounds ahead of the 45th Ryder Cup matches, set to kick off Friday.

About an hour before the team split into three groups of four, Bradley stepped forward to introduce Chris Mascali. The 42-year-old lieutenant from Ladder 157 in Flatbush, Brooklyn, stood there with his 8-year-old son, Joey—who carries the name of Chris’s late father, Joseph.

Joseph Mascali was just 44 years old—two years older than Chris is now—when he lost his life on 9/11. As a dedicated member of the elite Rescue 5 unit on Staten Island, he was off duty that day. But he didn’t hesitate. He rushed to join his ladder company and answered the call at the World Trade Center.
