Indian envoy meets Canadian Minister; discusses security, law enforcement collaboration

Ottawa:
Indian High Commissioner Dinesh K. Patnaik sat down with Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree to talk about strengthening security and law‑enforcement ties between the two countries.

The meeting added another milestone to the growing partnership between India and Canada.

“Honoured to meet Minister Gary Anandasangaree. Discussed our shared priorities in enhancing security and law enforcement cooperation between India and Canada. We also explored new avenues for collaboration and ways to further strengthen our existing engagement mechanisms,” the Indian High Commission in Ottawa reported that Patnaik said.

Earlier that Wednesday, Patnaik visited the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as part of a drive to deepen bilateral engagement.

According to the High Commission, he met several BC leaders, including Raj Chouhan, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly; Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests; and Sunita Dhir, Parliamentary Secretary.

He also talked with Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, and Jagrup Brar, Minister of State for Mining and Critical Minerals.

Their talks focused on boosting two‑way investment in mining, critical minerals and the energy sector, and on advancing cooperation in quantum technologies, life sciences and gold trade between India and Canada.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the High Commission noted that Patnaik, together with his wife Poonam Patnaik, made a historic visit to Treaty 7 land in Canada—the first time an Indian High Commissioner has visited the region.

The trip, held on November 24, opened a new chapter in relations between Canada’s Indigenous Nations and India.

The High Commission said the meeting explored shared histories, culture, heritage, and looked ahead to future collaboration between Indigenous peoples in Canada and Indian communities.

“The High Commissioner conveyed the deep respect and affection that people in India have for Indigenous Nations. He recalled that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, was deeply moved by the hospitality and cultural richness of Treaty 7 peoples during his meeting with Indigenous Chiefs in Kananaskis in June 2025,” the High Commission stated.
