India fined for slow over-rate after defeat to Australia in third ODI

India’s women’s cricket team faced a 10% fine on their match fees after a slow over-rate in their thrilling third ODI against Australia at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The visitors clinched a 43-run victory in a game that smashed records with a whopping 748 runs scored—the highest total ever in a women’s ODI.

ICC match referee G.S. Lakshmi handed down the penalty because India fell two overs short, even after accounting for time allowances. Under ICC rules, teams lose 5% of their fees for each over they’re behind. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur accepted the fine right away, skipping any hearing.

This penalty came at the end of an unforgettable clash packed with big hits—99 fours and 12 sixes flew off the bats in just 94.5 overs. Australia set the tone first, smashing 412 runs in 47.5 overs, their best ODI score. Beth Mooney starred with a brilliant 138, guiding her side to a massive total.

India’s chase fired up the crowd with Smriti Mandhana’s explosive 125 off only 63 balls—the fastest century by an Indian in women’s ODIs. She smashed 17 fours and five sixes, racing to her fifty in a record 23 balls for an Indian batter. Mandhana and Harmanpreet (52) put on 121 runs in a flash, while Deepti Sharma fought hard with 72. India powered past 100 runs in nine overs but lost steam with middle-order wickets, finishing at 369 in 47 overs.

Even in defeat, India made history as the first team to chase over 300 against Australia in women’s ODIs. Australia’s bowlers stayed cool under pressure, with Kim Garth grabbing three wickets and Megan Schutt shining too. Grace Harris turned the game when she caught Mandhana after an earlier drop, swinging momentum Australia’s way.

This high-scoring thriller kicked off the excitement for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, starting September 30. India kicks things off against Sri Lanka in Guwahati, while Australia takes on New Zealand in Indore on October 1. Fans can’t wait for more action from these stars like Mandhana and Mooney.
