Rahul Gandhi urges PM Modi to immediately announce comprehensive flood relief package for Punjab

Rahul Gandhi is ramping up pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to roll out a full-scale relief package for Punjab, hit hard by devastating floods. In a fresh post on X, the Congress leader highlighted the state’s massive losses—estimated at nearly Rs 20,000 crore—and slammed the government’s initial Rs 1,600 crore aid as unfair to flood victims.
Gandhi pointed to the widespread destruction: hundreds of thousands of homes wiped out, crops ruined across more than 4 lakh acres, and countless animals swept away in the floods. “The people of Punjab have shown incredible courage,” he wrote. “I’m sure they’ll rebuild with the right support. Prime Minister, please announce comprehensive relief right away.”
This isn’t the first time Gandhi has raised the alarm. On September 16, he sent a letter to Modi after visiting the state, where he saw the chaos firsthand as the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. He described shocking scenes: over 4 lakh acres of paddy crops destroyed, more than 10 lakh animals lost, and entire villages still underwater or cut off. Many affected families come from marginalized communities, with vast lands now too damaged for farming anytime soon. “In this tough time, the central government and all of India must stand with Punjab’s farmers, soldiers, and families,” Gandhi urged in the letter.
But not everyone agrees with Gandhi’s numbers. BJP leader Amit Malviya fired back on X, accusing him of playing politics with Punjab’s flood pain. Citing state government data, Malviya said animal deaths total around 34,000—not 10 lakh—and overall losses stand at Rs 13,289 crore, not Rs 20,000 crore. “Another round of lies from Rahul Gandhi,” Malviya posted. “While the central government supports flood-hit Punjab, he’s turning people’s suffering into a political game.”
