Nick Reiner threw ‘terrifying’ tantrums even as a kid: ‘So much anger in his eyes’
Nick Reiner has long been known for the extreme outbursts he threw as a child, which only grew more intense as he struggled to cope with substance abuse. A lifelong family friend who has known him all his life claims that these episodes eventually led to the shocking allegations that Reiner murdered his mother, Michele, and his father, Hollywood icon Rob Reiner.
The scuffles were so violent that Rob often had to physically hold Nick back. The friend told the Daily Mail that even as a youngster Nick could be seen with “so much anger in his eyes.” When his father tried to calm him, the encounters were described as “bear‑hug” restraints rather than actual punching.
He recalled, “It did get physical sometimes — I’m not talking punches, but restraining him. I was over there, it must have been early 2000s because he was about 11, and he was throwing the biggest tantrum, and [Rob] Reiner just had him in a bear hug to restrain him,” he said.
The friend added that the tantrums began for trivial reasons. “The tantrum was over nothing, but he had so much anger in his eyes. It was terrifying really.” He notes that the episodes persisted well into Nick’s twenties, never truly giving way to normalcy.
After speaking with Nick’s older brother, Jake, this week, the friend argues that the 78‑year‑old and his 70‑year‑old wife, Michele, had “babied” their son. He explained that Nick spent most of his life cycling in and out of drug rehabilitation programs, a pattern that, in the friend’s view, was fostered by parental over‑protection.
On Saturday evening, a confrontation at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas Party allegedly escalated. The next day, Romy Reiner, their 28‑year‑old daughter, discovered the bodies of her parents in their Brentwood home after a massage therapist had flagged that the family had missed a scheduled appointment. Police located Michele as well, both victims having been stabbed.
Nick Reiner was taken into custody around 15 miles from the couple’s estate on Sunday night, following the charges of first‑degree murder. The case, still unfolding, has left many to wonder how the pattern of abuse, addiction, and entitlement played a role in the tragic outcome.
