In Chennai, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin set the “Special Temple Service Scheme” in motion on Monday, November 10. The ceremony took place inside the historic Arulmigu Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Temple in Triplicane, a popular landmark for Hindus in the city.
The scheme is part of Tamil Nadu’s 2025‑26 State Budget and is designed to honor senior couples who are 70 years old or older. According to P.K. Sekarbabu, the Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE), the program will recognise 2,000 elderly couples across 20 HR & CE divisions. Each division will host a special service for 100 couples, providing them with blessings, traditional gifts and a token of respect.
At the Triplicane launch, 200 senior couples from Chennai were greeted by the Deputy Chief Minister. Each pair received a care package worth Rs 2,500. The gift included a dhoti, saree, turmeric, kumkum, bangles, a mirror, fruits and betel leaves, plus a framed photograph of the temple deity.
“We celebrate the devotion and gratitude of our elders,” said Sekarbabu. “This initiative strengthens the spiritual and social fabric of our temple communities across the state.”
After the service, Udhayanidhi Stalin opened new residential quarters for temple officials in Triplicane. The Rs 3.40 crore project covers housing for deputy commissioners, supervisory officers and general staff, improving working conditions and administrative efficiency at the HR & CE headquarters.
The event drew large crowds of devotees, temple staff and local residents, underscoring Tamil Nadu’s ongoing effort to weave welfare programs into its rich temple heritage. The “Special Temple Service Scheme” aims to keep older citizens honoured, supported, and connected to the community’s spiritual life.
