Elections in Bengal should be based on ballot, not bullet: Governor CV Ananda Bose

Kolkata, Nov 15 – West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose urged voters and political parties to keep elections peaceful and honest. Speaking to reporters at Raj Bhavan, he said the state must move from “bullet” politics to a true ballot‑based system.

The governor’s comments followed the National Democratic Alliance’s landslide win in the Bihar Assembly elections the day before. “Violence has no place in West Bengal,” Bose told the media. “We need an iron‑hand approach to stop any kind of brutality that might tarnish the 2026 Assembly poll.”

Bose highlighted two pressing problems that threaten a fair election: violence and corruption. “Before the polls open, we must curb the violence and clean up the electioneering process,” he added. “Only then can West Bengal return to its former glory and conduct free and fair elections.”

The governor also reassured the public that the Election Commission is taking steps to ensure transparency. “The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) programme is designed to clean up the election process,” he told reporters. “Bihar’s example shows it works, and Bengal’s people will see the same benefit.”

With violence a recurring issue in recent general, Assembly and panchayat elections, Governor Bose’s call for stricter enforcement and stricter scrutiny of campaign money is a clear warning that the next 2026 polls will demand higher standards of conduct.
