A powerful blast on Sunday ripped a house apart in Avadi, a suburb of Chennai, killing at least four people and leaving the building in rubble. The explosion was traced to country‑made firecrackers that were illegally stored in the home for sale during the upcoming Deepavali festival.
Residents on Thandurai Farmer Street heard the blast several streets away. The shockwave left cracks in nearby houses and sent the neighbourhood into panic. Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the scene, fought the flames, and later pulled out four charred bodies from the wreckage. Two victims, Yasin and Sunil, were identified as local residents; the identities of the other two are still being confirmed.
Police say the house was used to keep a large stock of firecrackers intended for Deepavali sales. “It appears the victims were handling or packing the explosives when the blast occurred,” a senior officer told reporters. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the residents had the proper permits.
The building was collapsed, splinters of concrete and wood littering the street. Firefighters worked for hours to clear the rubble and prevent any secondary burns from leftover chemicals. Forensic teams collected samples to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
Avadi police have registered a case and are questioning locals to identify the source of the explosives and possible suppliers. Residents in the area had previously warned authorities about unsafe fireworks storage in homes. In response, officials are stepping up inspections across Chennai’s suburbs to prevent similar tragedies before the Deepavali celebrations.
