External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar shared warm Independence Day wishes with Guatemala on Monday, highlighting India’s strong commitment to boosting ties with the Central American nation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar greeted Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez, the government, and the people of Guatemala. “Warm greetings to FM Carlos Ramiro Martinez, the Government and the people of Guatemala on their Independence Day. Reaffirm our commitment to deepen our friendship and cooperation,” he wrote.
India and Guatemala share friendly diplomatic relations, established back on May 16, 1972. India opened its mission in Guatemala City in 2010, and since then, political bonds between the two countries have grown steadily. High-level visits and joint initiatives have strengthened India-Guatemala relations, making them a key focus in bilateral diplomacy.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of these ties in 2022, the Indian Mission in Guatemala rolled out over 50 exciting cultural and commercial events across the country. The highlight was a grand commemorative event on November 18, 2022, hosted jointly with the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry at their headquarters. It featured Foreign Minister Mario Bucaro and vice ministers, marking a big step forward in India-Guatemala friendship.
Adding to the excitement, the Embassy of India in Guatemala made history with the world’s largest International Day of Yoga event outside India. Organized on behalf of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) with partners like the Municipality of San Pedro Carcha, the Association of Don Bosco Center, and support from the Governor of Alta Verapaz, the event took place on June 13, 2025, in San Pedro Carcha, Coban. Over 10,000 yoga lovers joined in, turning it into a massive celebration of wellness and cultural exchange that put Guatemala on the global yoga map.
These moments show how India-Guatemala relations continue to thrive through shared culture, diplomacy, and people-to-people connections.
