Jennifer Lopez is opening up about her divorce from Ben Affleck, calling the split and the lessons she learned from it the best thing that ever happened to her. In a recent chat with People magazine, the singer and actress shared how the experience sparked real personal growth.
"It changed me," Lopez explained. "It helped me grow in a way that I needed to grow."
The former couple’s story goes way back. Lopez and Affleck first met in 2002 and started dating, even getting engaged before calling it off in 2004. They both moved on—Lopez married Marc Anthony from 2004 to 2014, and they share twins Max and Emme. Affleck tied the knot with Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018, and they have three kids: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
Fast-forward to 2021, when Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance. They tied the knot in a quick Las Vegas ceremony in July 2022, then threw a bigger celebration in Georgia a month later. But things didn’t last. Lopez filed for divorce exactly two years after their wedding, citing irreconcilable differences.
Now, Lopez is channeling that energy into her latest project: the film Kiss of the Spider Woman, where Affleck steps in as an executive producer. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January—the same month their divorce became official.
Shooting the film wasn’t easy amid all the personal drama. "It was a really tough time," Lopez recalled. "Every moment on set, every moment I was doing this role, I was so happy, and then it was like, back home, it was not great. And it was just like, oh, you know, how do I reconcile this?"
Lopez filmed Kiss of the Spider Woman last year in New York while navigating those ups and downs with Affleck. The movie adapts the 1993 Broadway hit, which came from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. It stars Diego Luna and Tonatiuh alongside Lopez and hits theaters on October 10.
These days, sources say Lopez is thriving. She’s pouring her focus into her career and hyping up this passion project. "She’s come a long way since," an insider told People. "She’s very happy and just grateful for her life."
