US President Donald Trump recently shared his warm bond with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press conference in London with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Speaking on Thursday, Trump emphasized their strong personal connection and how he called Modi to wish him a happy 75th birthday.
“I’m very close to India. I’m very close to the Prime Minister of India,” Trump said. “Spoke to him the other day, wished him a happy birthday. We have a very good relationship.” He added that Modi even posted a nice statement in response.
In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump described the call as wonderful. “Just had a wonderful phone call with my friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I wished him a very Happy Birthday! He is doing a tremendous job. Narendra: Thank you for your support on ending the War between Russia and Ukraine! President DJT,” the post read.
PM Modi quickly responded on X (formerly Twitter), calling Trump “my friend” and thanking him for the birthday wishes. “Thank you, my friend, President Trump, for your phone call and warm greetings on my 75th birthday. Like you, I am also fully committed to taking the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership to new heights. We support your initiatives towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict,” Modi wrote.
This friendly exchange happened amid ongoing efforts to boost India-US ties. On the same day, US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch visited New Delhi to talk trade with Indian officials. He met Ministry of Commerce and Industry Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal on Tuesday to push forward bilateral trade negotiations. The two sides agreed to speed up work on a fair trade agreement that benefits both countries.
The Ministry of Commerce stated that Lynch’s team discussed key issues, including the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, with Department of Commerce officials on September 16, 2025. These talks aim to strengthen economic links between New Delhi and Washington.
However, Trump didn’t shy away from some tough talk. He expressed frustration over India’s purchase of Russian oil, linking it to a 50% tariff on India— with 25% specifically aimed at this oil trade. “China is paying a very large tariff right now to the United States. But I’m willing to do other things, but not when the people that I’m fighting for are buying oil from Russia,” Trump said. He added that lower oil prices could help end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, noting the US now produces more oil than any other country.
These developments highlight the mix of friendship and challenges in India-US relations, from birthday calls to trade hurdles and global issues like the Ukraine war.
