100 5G labs set up across India to boost 6G research ecosystem: Govt

India has opened 100 new 5G labs across the country to push 6G research and help the country stay ahead in next‑generation technology. The move, announced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is part of a national effort to build a strong ecosystem for 6G development.

At the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC 2025), DoT Secretary Neeraj Mittal shared the details. He said the labs will drive the creation of real‑world use cases and strengthen India’s position in global 6G innovation. The government aims for a 10 percent share of worldwide 6G patents by 2030, a goal that the new labs hope to support.

The DoT is backing over 100 research and development projects focused on key 6G areas such as Open RAN, home‑grown chipsets, AI‑powered networks, and regulatory sandboxes that encourage experimentation. The strategy also includes boosting local manufacturing and forging close ties between academia, industry and government.

Industry leaders at the conclave discussed private networks and broader telecom goals. Panels highlighted ways to expand the 5G ecosystem, improve India’s own positioning system (NavIC L1 signal), and develop a complete technology stack from device‑to‑machine connectivity to 6G.

ESTIC 2025, held from November 3‑5, drew more than 3,000 participants, including scientists, innovators, Nobel laureates and policymakers. The event underscored India’s ambition to become a global leader in telecom technology, with the new 5G labs and 6G initiatives playing a central role in that journey.
