90-year-old driver destroys coffee shop in full-speed, caught-on-video crash

A 90‑year‑old driver is believed to have been intoxicated when his vehicle smashed into the Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company on Thanksgiving night, according to police.

A surveillance clip shows the car speeding down University Avenue around 9 p.m. on Thursday, then striking the coffee shop head‑on and sending the driver to the hospital.

“Just devastated with the destruction, but incredibly grateful that no one was injured inside aside from the driver of the vehicle,” owner Teri Hope told reporters, adding that the accident “has turned half of the building into rubble—this is the heart of our business.”

Images from the scene reveal a dark‑colored sedan perched atop the shattered storefront, having flown through the front plate‑glass.

Los Gatos police released a statement saying that “alcohol may have played a role in this incident but all factors are being looked at as part of the ongoing investigation.”

The shop was closed and empty at the time, and the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle, who remained in stable condition at a local hospital.

Local patrons hearing the news expressed disbelief, with regular Sheila Lebedenko telling ABC, “So many times we’ve sat in that room that’s been devastated, and it’s just to think that you could be sitting there drinking coffee, eating pastry, watching musicians and that could just suddenly happen.”

Despite the damage, Hope is determined to reopen. “I believe we are going to be back on our feet shortly,” she said.
