Gujarat Police strike hard: Cyber criminals crushed, international rackets exposed

Ahmedabad – Dec 2 – Gujarat Police have launched an aggressive hunt against cyber crime, taking down major fraud rings and rescuing citizens who fell prey to online scams that spanned the country and beyond.

On November 18, the Gujarat Cyber Crime Cell dealt a severe blow to a global cyber‑crime syndicate. The Cyber Centre of Excellence (CCoE) team arrested Nilesh Purohit, who orchestrated an international cyber‑slavery operation that lured Indian youth into scam camps in Myanmar and Cambodia—camps operated by Chinese‑linked criminal networks. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi lauded the breakthrough, noting that the raid exposed an extensive and chilling trans‑national network behind digital slavery. “Purohit had already trafficked hundreds of innocent people by promising legitimate jobs and then forcing them into cyber‑fraud schemes,” he said. SP Rajdeepsinh Jhala explained how the cyber unit painstakingly traced cross‑border links and unraveled the complex web connecting offenders thousands of miles apart.

Just two days later, on November 20, the Surat Cyber Police launched a tense operation that saved a retired government officer, Amit Desai, from the clutches of fraudsters masquerading as investigative agencies. DCP Bishakha Jain revealed that Desai had been psychologically held hostage, on the brink of transferring his life’s savings. The cyber cell intervened swiftly, rescuing him and preserving every rupee he had earned.

These reprieves are part of a wider, sustained crackdown that began in May. The state’s cyber units have dismantled networks in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, and Vadodara, negotiating a series of high‑profile arrests across the region.

Ahmedabad cyber‑crime unit – May 16: Six members of a China‑linked syndicate, operating out of Cambodia and Nepal, were arrested after they hacked the bank account of Pranay Bhavsar, siphoning ₹48.85 lakh.
May 14: Two men in Surat were nabbed after running a digital‑arrest scam that cost victims ₹14.94 lakh.

Surat cyber‑cell – May 2‑7: A fraudster moored in Dubai was arrested. Later, Rahul Chaudhary of Vapi was caught for duping victims of ₹9.30 lakh with bogus forex‑trading schemes. On May 15, Amit Kumar and Sumit Kumar Thakur were taken down for a ₹98.85 lakh cyber‑fraud. In a surprising turn, a 90‑year‑old Nepalese resident, Parth Gopani, was arrested at Lucknow Airport on May 16 after being cheated of ₹1.15 crore. The same day, Krunalsinh Sisodia was taken into custody for digitally arresting an elderly citizen and defrauding him of ₹22 lakh.

Rajkot cyber team – May 2‑3: Action was taken against nine social media influencers who promoted illegal online betting sites. On May 3, Raghuveer Singh Chauhan was apprehended at the Gujarat–Maharashtra border for creating fake online profiles and scamming victims.

Vadodara cyber cell – May 15: In a case involving a ₹2.71 crore online fraud, more than ₹1 crore was recovered. The fraudster behind a ₹23 lakh digital‑arrest scam was arrested in Pune.

From dismantling global syndicates to rescuing citizens at the brink of digital loss, Gujarat Police have demonstrated that the law can’t be evaded, no matter how far criminals run. The rapid, intelligent, and relentless operations of the Cyber Crime Cell send a clear message: if you commit cyber‑crime, Gujarat Police will find you—anywhere.
