‘Earlier, we saw husbands as our sampatti, now they consider us lakhpatis’: Noor Jahan tells PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought warmth and inspiration to the launch of Bihar’s Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana on Friday. Speaking via video conference from Patna, he connected directly with women beneficiaries who are building their own paths to success through hard work and government support.
One standout moment came from Noor Jahan, a resident of Gayaji in Bihar. In a touching chat, she called the Prime Minister “bhaiya” multiple times, sharing how schemes like this have empowered women in her community. “Earlier, we saw our husbands as our only wealth,” she said with a smile. “Now, they see us as lakhpatis—people with real earning power.” Her words drew laughs and nods from everyone, including Modi.
Noor Jahan explained how the program’s Rs 10,000 startup grant opens doors for women to launch businesses they dream of. “Families used to stop us from stepping out, and some husbands even turned violent,” she shared. “But self-reliance has changed everything. Now, we get respect at home, and there’s a real festive vibe everywhere.”
After the event, Noor Jahan spoke with about her plans. She aims to use the full Rs 2 lakh support to expand her tailoring shop by adding a new counter and hiring more staff. Right now, her business already employs 10 people, and she’s excited to grow it further.
She lit up talking about the opportunity to speak directly with PM Modi and Bihar’s Chief Minister through the Jeevika program. “As poor women, our voices were never heard before,” Noor Jahan said. “Today, we shared our stories with leaders, and it feels amazing.” She was especially proud when Modi asked her for a personal favor: to set aside one day a week to gather 50 to 100 women and spread the word on government schemes for women empowerment.
“The Prime Minister wants us to help others get aware, connect to jobs, and build self-reliant lives,” she added. “This way, more families can gain economic strength and live happier.” Stories like Noor Jahan’s highlight how initiatives like Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana are transforming lives in Bihar, one enterprising woman at a time.
