Russell Wilson fires back at ‘classless’ Sean Payton over Giants QB dig: ‘Still bounty hunting’

Russell Wilson fired back at former Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton after Payton seemed to hint at him during the Broncos’ 33‑32 comeback win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

On X, Wilson responded with a jab about the Saints’ infamous Bountygate scandal, reminding Payton that the bounty scheme that landed the coach in a 2012 suspension was still a talking point fifteen years later. Wilson’s message was short and punchy: “Classless…but not surprised…didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media.” He added the hashtag #LetsRide, a nod to his own long‑running media brand.

Payton’s post‑game press conference was considered by many as a dig at Wilson. He stopped for a moment before praising rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who had taken over the Giants’ starting job after Wilson tutored the team for the first three games of the season. Payton said Dart had added spark to the offense and that, when speaking to Giants owner John Mara a few weeks earlier, the coach wished the change had come sooner. The implication was clear: Payton would have preferred to face Wilson instead of Dart.

Wilson’s stint with the Broncos was marked by struggles. In 2023, the team finished 7‑8 in his second season, and Payton benched him for backup Jarrett Stidham with two games remaining in the 2023 campaign. Wilson was eventually cut, costing the Broncos $85 million in dead cap, and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 before heading to the Giants last year. His performance with New York was underwhelming: 778 passing yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 58.9% completion rate.

With Dart now at the helm, the Giants have found a new rhythm. After taking over in Week 4, the rookie quarterback has gone 2‑2, helping the Giants move past a 3‑5 hole to a 5‑6 record. The offensive change has given the team a new edge, a contrast to the defensive flair that once made Payton’s legacy.

Payton’s remarks, coupled with Wilson’s social‑media comeback, have reignited debate about legacy, accountability and player‑coach dynamics in the NFL. While Payton’s history with Bounty hunting is well documented, Wilson is arguing that the old stain still colors his public perception. Fans and analysts alike are watching to see whether this exchange will impact the Nelson‑style negotiation talks rolling out this week, or whether the Lions’ threads will remain a footnote in the season’s broader narrative.

The recent showdown underscores a broader theme in the league: restless quarterbacks often clash with veteran coaches, and the media flash a spotlight on every public exchange. Wilson’s fire‑fighting post and Payton’s defensive placement of Jaxson Dart illustrate how rapidly fortunes can shift in a league that thrives on tension and storytelling.
