Raj Transport dept issues over 19,000 challans; 1,034 vehicles seized

Jaipur – The Rajasthan government has launched a 15‑day road‑safety drive to cut traffic crashes across the state, officials said on Saturday. The campaign runs from November 4 to 18 under Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s direction, aiming to educate drivers and tighten penalties for illegal driving.

Police took swift action between November 4 and 14, targeting 7,516 people for drunk driving, 51,289 for speeding, 36,941 for driving the wrong way, 3,253 for reckless driving, 10,548 for not using reflectors and 19,199 for vehicles without number plates. Authorities also issued 19,892 traffic tickets, including 1,224 for overloading, 406 for illegal passenger transport, 13,551 for miscellaneous violations, 206 for excess passengers and 2,487 for passenger‑vehicle infractions. The department revoked 434 driving licences and cancelled 98 vehicle registrations; a total of 1,034 vehicles were seized and 46 permits cancelled.

In addition to enforcement, the campaign raised awareness among nearly half a million residents. Police teams ran lane‑use drills along highways, especially on the NH‑48 corridor, and posted signs to remind drivers of speed limits and safe passing. The Transport and Road Safety Department kept a close eye on load limits and vehicle fit‑for‑service standards, while the Medical and Health Department ran eye‑tests on bus and truck drivers over 45, handing out spectacles as needed.

Infrastructure work also featured prominently. The Public Works Department cleared roadside bushes, repaired speed breakers and installed warning signs. Footpaths were straightened and street lights repaired by the Urban Development and Local Bodies Department, which also moved stray animals from roadsides. Meanwhile, the state’s police squads kept lanes clear and tackled offenders in real time.

The initiative, a joint effort across ministries and district offices, demonstrates Rajasthan’s commitment to reducing road accidents. The government plans to keep the momentum going with ongoing safety audits and driver education, hoping to make every journey across the state safer for all.
