BSF, Bengal Police reach settlement after clash between two forces in Nadia district (Ld)

In a late‑night clash on Tuesday in Chapra, West Bengal, a Border Security Force (BSF) team and local police fought over the custody of a large shipment of banned cough syrup, Phensedyl.

The incident began when residents in the Seemanagar area of Chapra opened a truckload of packets that turned out to contain 1,753 bottles of the illegal drug. They immediately notified the Chapra police station. Police moved quickly to the scene, seized the bottles, and drove them away in their vehicle.

Shortly after, BSF jawans from the Seemanagar 32 Battalion arrived. The BSF wanted to take the seized cough syrup under their control, but the Krishnanagar police said it was their jurisdiction. The disagreement escalated into a physical fight. Both sides suffered minor injuries, and additional officers and BSF teams rushed in to restore order.

Local authorities, however, were able to settle the dispute. The Krishnanagar Police District released the BSF jawan who had been detained earlier in the night, and no charges were filed against him. Both forces agreed that the Phensedyl bottles would stay in the hands of the Krishnanagar police.

Deputy Inspector General Nilotpal Pandey, spokesperson for the VSF’s South Bengal Frontiers, announced that the misunderstanding has been resolved. He confirmed that personnel on both sides received only minor injuries and that the matter was “mutually settled.” Sanjaykumar Meetkumar Makwana, the additional superintendent of Krishnanagar police, added that the injured officers received preliminary treatment.

The incident highlights tensions that can arise when national security forces and local police clash over seized contraband. It also underscores the importance of clear procedures and communication between agencies to prevent future conflicts.
