Leonardo DiCaprio on how he lands roles with top Hollywood directors: Luck
Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming up with acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson for the first time in the upcoming thriller One Battle After Another. The Hollywood star opened up about how he scores dream collaborations with top directors like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, crediting a mix of luck and sheer determination.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, the 50-year-old actor shared his secret sauce. "Luck. Luck, and I guess the perseverance of just letting them know that you want to work with them someday, when the time is right," DiCaprio said. He recalled meeting Scorsese as a young actor by simply expressing his eagerness: "That’s what I’ve been doing; that’s how I met Marty when I was young. I just let him know that if he’s ready, I’m ready."
As a self-proclaimed cinephile, DiCaprio has a deep passion for cinema. He loves diving into classic movies and believes standout films naturally bubble to the top. "I really love film as an art form; I love watching old movies," he explained. "There are certain filmmakers that have a multitude of those films—Paul is one of them, Quentin is one of them, Marty’s one of them. So I just let them know I’m ready and I’m game if they are."
DiCaprio is thrilled about this new project with Anderson, calling him one of the greatest visionary filmmakers of their generation. They nearly worked together on Boogie Nights back in the day, but DiCaprio had to pass due to his commitment to Titanic. Now, he’s making up for lost time. "Any time that he asks, you work with P.T.A.," DiCaprio gushed. "His films, I’m still intrigued by to this day; I still talk about The Master, Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia—these films that are going to last for generations to come. So you jump at an opportunity to work with Paul."
Even as DiCaprio slows down on taking on new roles, he couldn’t turn down Anderson. It’s clear why—these Hollywood collaborations keep fans hooked, and we’re excited to see what One Battle After Another brings next.
