Martin Scorsese is teaming up with his longtime buddy Leonardo DiCaprio and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence for a chilling new ghost story movie. The project adapts Peter Cameron’s acclaimed novel What Happens at Night, and Apple Original Films is in talks to back it alongside Studiocanal. Scorsese will direct, while Patrick Marber handles the screenplay adaptation.
The story dives into the eerie tale of an American couple heading to a snowy, mysterious European city to adopt a baby. The wife battles cancer, leaving her frail, and her husband fears the orphanage won’t let them take the child home. Things get even spookier when they check into the massive, empty Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel. Picture this: a never-closing bar, a lobby full of oddballs like a flashy old singer, a wild businessman, and a shady faith healer. In this frozen, twisted world, nothing feels real. As the couple fights for their baby, they start questioning their marriage, themselves, and even life itself.
This marks Scorsese’s first time directing Lawrence, though he’s already producing her upcoming thriller Die, My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay. That film wowed crowds at Cannes 2025 and has strong Oscar buzz for Lawrence’s performance—it’s hitting theaters this fall.
DiCaprio, meanwhile, is on a hot streak. He’s earning rave reviews for his role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, a thriller loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland. The plot follows old revolutionaries reuniting after 16 years to face a resurfaced enemy. DiCaprio stars as Bob Ferguson, with Regina Hall as Deandra. The movie kicks off the Galas section at the 9th Pingyao International Film Festival (PIFF), running from September 24 to 30, 2025, with a packed lineup of global films.
Scorsese and DiCaprio have a killer track record, collaborating on six films over 20 years. Lawrence and DiCaprio also shared the screen in the hit 2021 satire Don’t Look Up. Fans of Scorsese movies, Leonardo DiCaprio films, and Jennifer Lawrence projects won’t want to miss this ghostly adventure—stay tuned for more updates on What Happens at Night!
