Justice Ashok Bhushan reappointed NCLAT Chairperson

The Indian government has approved the re‑appointment of Justice Ashok Bhushan as the Chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). The decision was announced by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) and cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Justice Bhushan will take over the post from the date he begins his new role and will serve until he turns 70 on July 4, 2026. He will receive a fixed monthly salary of ₹2.5 lakh.

Bhushan started his legal career as a permanent judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2001. He became the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in 2015 and was elevated to the Supreme Court of India in 2016. He also chaired the Ravi Beas River Tribunal in 2020 before retiring from the Supreme Court on July 4, 2021.

Since November 2021, Bhushan has led the NCLAT, an apex body that handles disputes under the Companies Act, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), and the Competition Act. His re‑appointment is seen as a continuation of his experience in overseeing complex corporate legal matters.

The NCLAT plays a key role in India’s corporate justice system, providing timely resolution of company law cases and contributing to the country’s regulatory framework. This move reinforces the government’s focus on strengthening legal institutions that support business growth and economic stability.
