Elderly woman beaten up in Kolkata for protesting against bursting firecrackers

In south Kolkata’s Bhawanipur area, an 82‑year‑old woman in Bhawanipur, Anupama Chowdhury, lodged a complaint on Thursday after being attacked by five men for trying to stop noisy firecrackers during Kali Puja.

The incident happened early Tuesday night, around 1:30 a.m., when local youths lit firecrackers well past the permitted hours. Chowdhury says the loud explosions caused a small fire at her home, and she stepped downstairs to ask the boys to stop. The boys grabbed her and her brother and beat them. “I was sleeping and saw smoke. I couldn’t breathe. I tried to stop the boys. They hit me,” she told reporters. Residents in the area did not come to her aid.

When Chowdhury first went to a police station later that night, officers declined to register a complaint, citing the festive season. She returned two days later with a lawyer, and the police finally opened an FIR against the five men. No arrests have been made yet, and the victim fears further violence.

Police say they are investigating the harassment and welcome cooperation from the community. The case highlights growing concerns over unchecked firecracker use and safety risks in Kolkata’s festive neighborhoods.
