No relief by SC for Jacqueline Fernandez in the Rs 200 crore money laundering case
India’s Supreme Court has turned down Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez’s plea for relief in the high-profile Rs 200 crore fraud case tied to conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar. The decision comes after she challenged a ruling from the Delhi High Court.
Back in July 3, the Delhi High Court shot down Fernandez’s request to dismiss the FIR filed against her by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a related money laundering probe. Fernandez, known for her role in the film Murder 2, argued in her Supreme Court petition that evidence from the ED paints her as a victim of Sukesh’s scheme.
Her lawyers highlighted that the ED even acknowledged how Tihar Jail officials let Sukesh use mobile phones and gadgets to scam people, including Fernandez and other Bollywood stars. They also stressed that since she’s a key witness for the prosecution in the main fraud case, any action against her should get quashed right away.
But the Delhi High Court pushed back, saying courts need to sort out if someone broke the law during a full trial in the lower courts. Fernandez has always denied the charges, insisting she had zero clue about Sukesh’s shady criminal history.
The ED claims she accepted luxury gifts worth about Rs 7 crore from him, but Fernandez maintains she was unaware of where the money came from.
This isn’t the first time the Delhi High Court has stood firm. Earlier, it refused to drop the case, noting that questions about her intentions and knowledge of the crimes must play out in trial.
For context, Delhi Police arrested Sukesh Chandrasekhar for allegedly swindling Rs 200 crore from the wives of former Ranbaxy promoters, Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh, in a massive extortion racket. The case has rocked Bollywood with its web of celebrities and scams.
