India’s central government is stepping up to help Karnataka’s farmers hit hard by heavy rains this season. In a timely boost just before Navratri, officials have approved buying five key crops at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the 2025-26 kharif season.
Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi shared the good news on Saturday. The government will procure green gram (also known as hesaru), black gram (uddina), groundnut (shenga), soybean, and sunflower directly from Karnataka farmers. This decision came after Joshi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to act on the farmers’ plight caused by excessive rains.
“Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan personally wrote to me confirming the approval,” Joshi’s office stated. The move aims to give Karnataka farmers much-needed financial relief and stability.
Under the MSP plan, the government has greenlit purchases of 38,000 metric tonnes of green gram, 60,810 metric tonnes of black gram, 15,650 metric tonnes of sunflower, 61,148 metric tonnes of groundnut, and a whopping 115,000 metric tonnes of soybean from the state.
Prime Minister Modi quickly directed relief efforts after Joshi’s letters highlighted the distress. Agriculture Minister Chouhan followed through by approving the procurement to support the farmers right away.
Joshi emphasized that the Karnataka state government needs to move fast. They should set up procurement centers across all districts and start buying without delay to ensure the aid reaches every farmer.
Speaking for Karnataka’s farming community, Joshi thanked Prime Minister Modi and Minister Chouhan. “Their quick response shows real understanding of our farmers’ struggles,” he said. This MSP support could make a big difference for those battling the tough weather.
