Mauritius holds special place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision: President Murmu while meeting PM Ramgoolam

President Droupadi Murmu warmly welcomed Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and his delegation to Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. During their meeting, she highlighted how Mauritius holds a special spot in India’s Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR Vision. This shows New Delhi’s strong dedication to the Global South, according to an official release from the President’s Secretariat.
The visit comes as part of Prime Minister Ramgoolam’s state trip to India, running from September 9 to 16. He also explored key spots like Mumbai, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Tirupati, soaking in India’s vibrant culture and heritage.
President Murmu praised the steady rise in India-Mauritius relations across various sectors. She pointed out the recent upgrade to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership as a big win for both nations. “Our partnership and cooperation have grown in every field,” she noted, emphasizing the deep bonds.
India continues to back Mauritius’s growth plans, especially with a fresh Special Economic Package. President Murmu expressed confidence that this support will meet the needs of the Mauritian government and its people. Key projects include building hospitals, improving roads, developing ports, boosting defence procurement, and enabling joint surveillance. These efforts will strengthen infrastructure and lift the quality of life for Mauritians in the coming years.
Looking ahead, the leaders discussed expanding ties into exciting new areas like digital technologies and the space sector. This forward push marks a fresh chapter in India-Mauritius engagement.
Both sides agreed that their relationship stands out, built on shared history, language, culture, and values. President Murmu voiced optimism that under Prime Minister Ramgoolam’s guidance, the longstanding India-Mauritius friendship will only get stronger.
