UN Warns Pakistan’s Afghan Deportations Could Spark Deeper Crisis in Afghanistan
In a pressing call from Geneva, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has sounded the alarm over Pakistan’s mass deportations of Afghan nationals. Without quick global help, these moves could make Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis even worse, according to reports from Khamaa Press.
UNHCR’s representative for Afghanistan, Arafat Jamal, spoke out on September 12. He urged Pakistan’s government in Islamabad to stop expelling vulnerable Afghans right away. Many of these people are asylum seekers who truly need protection. Jamal added that the UNHCR stands ready to team up with Pakistani officials to spot and protect the most at-risk groups.
UN data shows a huge rush: almost 100,000 Afghans returned from Pakistan in just the first week of September. This sudden wave is hitting Afghanistan hard. The country already struggles with a shaky economy, poor healthcare, food shortages, and not enough shelter to handle so many people coming back at once.
Aid groups around the world are worried too. They say sending back large numbers of Afghan refugees could tip the nation into even more chaos and instability, as Khamaa Press highlights.
To tackle this, Jamal announced the UNHCR has boosted its regional funding appeal to $258.6 million. This money would cover urgent needs like food, shelter, and medical help for Afghan families. But he warned that without new donations, the agency might have to cut off vital life-saving support.
Things have gotten tougher due to the Taliban’s ban on women working in UN offices. This forced the UNHCR to pause cash aid for returnees. Jamal explained it’s a tough but necessary step—operations simply can’t go on without female staff to help deliver services.
The bigger picture is grim. UN estimates put the number of Afghan migrants deported from neighboring countries at over 2.6 million since early 2025. This massive forced displacement shows the huge strain on Pakistan, which must juggle its own issues with duties under international refugee laws.
Jamal stressed the need for joint efforts across the region and globe. Without them, both Pakistan and Afghanistan could face a spiraling humanitarian disaster, as reported by Khamaa Press and . The world watches closely as this Afghan refugee crisis unfolds.
