Louisiana father with ‘heart of gold’ accidentally killed on hunting trip: ‘He had a contagious smile’
Garret Verdun, a 45‑year‑old resident of Louisiana, was tragically killed during a hunting outing when his rifle fired unexpectedly and struck him in the head. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on November 29 in Lafourche Parish, as reported by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF). While heading to their chosen spots, Verdun’s hunting companion had just crossed a cattle guard when Verdun handed him the rifle, only to find it discharge a .308‑caliber round that fatally hit him. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators from the LDWF are working alongside the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office to uncover how the incident happened.
In the aftermath, Verdun’s daughter, 19‑year‑old Chloe, posted a heartfelt tribute on Facebook in which she shared her love for her father: “I wish more than anything I wouldn’t be making this post, but I’m so blessed to have shared 19 years with you. I love you forever, Dad, and always will.” She added, “You will forever be my role model and favorite person. Until we meet again — forever will be your love bug.” The sentiment reflected how deeply she felt his absence.
Friends and family remembered Verdun as a man with a “heart of gold,” always ready to help and offer comforting words. An online obituary praised his strong relationships and boundless love, noting his joy in spending time with his children, Chloe and Ethan, his partner Tiffany Hunter, and friends. The obituary highlighted his passion for the outdoors and craftsmanship, as well as his charismatic smile, calling him a man who will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, his family has requested donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit supporting injured and ill military veterans. Garret is survived by his fiancée, daughter, and son. Following the tragedy, the LDWF released a reminder urging hunters to transport firearms unloaded and always keep safety engaged while traveling to and from their hunting sites.
