Thousands appear for JKAS competitive exam in J&K amid fight cancellation, age relaxation row

In Srinagar and Jammu on Sunday, the Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) held the JKAS exam while the region was embroiled in a heated debate over flight cancellations and uncertain age‑relaxation rules. Despite Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s request to delay the test because of the chaos in air travel and the pending status of the age‑relaxation issue, the commission proceeded with the competition. All designated centres in both cities opened for the exam at 10 a.m.
The ruling National Conference (NC) noted that the age‑relaxation file for the exam was still with the Lieutenant Governor, but the Lok Bhawan firmly said no particular file concerning the exam’s conduct had been withheld. The L‑G stated that he had received the overall government‑jobs age‑relaxation file on December 2, returned it that same day with a query, and had asked whether the exam could still be held if the upper age limit was to be increased. No response followed from the government.
JKPSC had released the exam notification on August 22, scheduling the test for December 7 and setting the age limits at 32 for open merit, 34 for reserved or in‑service candidates, and 35 for those with physical disabilities. The administration, however, sought to raise these caps to 35, 37, and 38 respectively. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, CPI(M) leader M.Y. Tarigami, and other leaders pressed the L‑G and CM to resolve the matter swiftly. The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association also urged the L‑G to step in and alleviate the uncertainty faced by thousands of aspirants.
