UN Resident Coordinator Shombi Sharp

India’s growing clout on the world stage is turning heads at the United Nations. Shombi Sharp, the UN Resident Coordinator in India, recently spotlighted the country’s key role in shaping geopolitics, driving development, and supporting peacekeeping efforts worldwide.

Speaking to in New York on September 26, Sharp praised India’s dedication to “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”—an ancient philosophy meaning the world is one family. He sees this mindset as a game-changer for tackling today’s big global issues, from conflicts to climate threats.

“India is playing an increasingly critical role in the geopolitical space and in the development space,” Sharp told . He highlighted how India balances high-tech breakthroughs, like its successful moon landing, with real-world wins in lifting millions out of poverty. These efforts inspire other nations in the Global South, where developing countries face similar hurdles.

Sharp noted that India focuses on practical solutions for these challenges. The country is pushing boundaries in renewable energy and food security—areas vital for fighting climate change and hunger. “India is innovating and investing in renewable energy like perhaps no other country right now, and food security as well,” he said.

On the security front, Sharp emphasized India’s strong partnership with the UN in counterterrorism. “India and the UN have worked together very closely on counterterrorism measures,” he explained. He stressed the need for India’s brand of leadership, rooted in that “world as one family” spirit.

When it comes to peacekeeping, India stands out as a powerhouse. It’s the largest contributor of troops and civilian personnel to UN missions since the organization began. Sharp referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words: India is deeply committed to being a force for peace. “We see India’s powerful role in peace and security,” Sharp added.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar echoed these themes at the recent G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting. Sharp quoted him saying peace and development go hand in hand—like two sides of the same coin. India’s work in South-South cooperation and as a voice for the Global South helps create lasting global peace, he noted.

Jaishankar called for a fair balance between peace and development, pointing out double standards in international responses. He warned that the Global South bears the heaviest burden from ongoing crises, including those in Ukraine, Palestine, and Sudan. His push for equitable solutions and climate justice drew praise from Sharp as “very balanced remarks.”

As India continues to lead, its blend of innovation, compassion, and global teamwork offers hope for a more united world.
