Jaipur – Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has called for a judicial commission to investigate the deadly fire that shook Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital on Tuesday. The blaze killed eight people and injured several others.
Gehlot said the tragedy was a clear example of “systemic negligence” that he says is all too common in Rajasthan. He reminded people of past disasters, such as the Jhalawar school roof collapse that took seven children’s lives, and recent deaths caused by contaminated cough syrup for kids.
On social media, Gehlot asked, “How many times have we seen such negligence?” He added that the fire at SMS Hospital felt “unprecedented” and described the scene: families in tears, pleading for the bodies of their relatives, and chaos that shocked everyone who saw it.
He criticised the state government’s response, saying Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma should have gone to the hospital that night to show support and calm angry families. “If the Chief Minister had spoken to them, it would have shown that the government cares,” Gehlot said. “But no one did, and the anger just grew.”
Gehlot visited the site himself and said the damage was devastating. He said the ward was completely gutted and that some victims may have died from suffocation, stressing that negligence was undeniable.
The current plan—a short‑term internal committee—does not satisfy Gehlot. He says the committee will only hand over a report in seven days, suspend a few officials, and close the case. “Only a judicial commission can find the root causes, recommend long‑term reforms, and stop such tragedies from happening again in any hospital or school across Rajasthan,” he insisted.
