The Samajwadi Party (SP) has blasted Facebook for suspending the official page of its national president, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Party leaders claim the move stifles opposition voices and undermines democracy in India.
On X (formerly Twitter), SP senior leaders Fakhrul Hasan Chaand and Rajeev Rai read out their condemnation: “Suspending Akhilesh Yadav’s account is an attack on democracy and a blow to India’s political system.” Chaand said the BJP‑led government is “trying to shut down every opposition voice” and called the decision “cowardice.” Rai echoed the criticism, warning that any party‑backed action to silence a major opposition leader would be a major mistake.
Other SP figures, such as Pooja Shukla and Pawan Pandey, also fired shots at Facebook. They demanded the platform explain why it shut down Yadav’s page without notice and urged it to respect its boundaries. Both highlighted that Yadav is “the voice of millions” and that silencing him is equivalent to silencing democracy itself.
The controversy comes amid growing concerns about social media platforms’ role in Indian politics. The SP’s statements have sparked a wider debate about free speech, platform accountability, and the power of the ruling BJP to influence public messaging. India’s third‑largest party remains ready to fight “anti‑people policies” and will continue to press Facebook for transparency.
