In Guwahati, the crowd outside Baksa District Jail turned violent today, sparking fresh protests over the death of singer Zubeen Garg.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Gaurav Gogoi urged calm and said that the only real justice would come through a fair trial, not street action. He blamed police and the home department for not preventing the unrest. “Violence makes the problem worse,” Gogoi said.
The clash began when five men accused in Zubeen Garg’s death were taken to Baksa jail in a heavy police guard. People demanded that the accused – festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma – be shown to the public. Stone‑pelting broke out, injuring a police officer and damaging cars. Security forces used batons to break up the mob, and several people were taken into custody for unlawful assembly.
District Magistrate Gautam Das issued an immediate ban on any public gatherings within 500 metres of the jail. The order blocks rallies, processions, weapons, and even firecrackers. Those who violate the ban face serious legal action. The stay on gatherings remains in force until further notice.
The court decided to detain Mahanta and Sharma in Baksa jail instead of Guwahati Central Jail because of security risks and the need for close supervision. The other three accused – Sandeepan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya – were also taken into custody.
Gogoi warned that attacks on journalists and media houses were “completely unacceptable” and called on officials to protect reporters. He asked all parties to let the law take its course and avoid further violence.
The scene at Baksa jail is a key episode in Assam’s rising tensions over Zubeen Garg’s death, and it has highlighted gaps in law enforcement’s emergency response. The focus remains on keeping the public safe while the legal process moves forward.
