Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, announced on Friday a record‑size relief package for farmers hit by last week’s severe weather. The government will hand out Rs 10 000 crore in aid, the biggest ever in the state’s history.
Under the plan, farmers who lost crops to the unpredictable rains will get Rs 22 000 for each hectare of damaged land, up to a maximum of two hectares per farmer. The scheme gives the same payment for irrigated and non‑irrigated fields, a first for Gujarat.
The announcement follows intensive damage surveys. More than 5,100 teams checked crop losses in 16,500 villages across 251 tehsils in 33 districts. The chief minister ordered the surveys finish within three days, showing the urgency of the relief effort.
Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi flew to Surat, Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani visited Bhavnagar, and other ministers—Naresh Patel, Arjun Modhwadia, Pradyuman Vaja and Kaushik Vekariya—examined damage in tribal and coastal areas like Tapi, Junagadh, Gir Somnath and Amreli. Patel himself toured Gir Somnath and Junagadh, meeting farmers, listening to their concerns and pledging full support.
A high‑level meeting finished the package. Minister Jitu Vaghani, Rushikesh Patel, Kunvarji Bavaliya, Arjun Modhwadia and Raman Solanki chaired the session, while Finance Minister Kanu Desai and Deputy CM Sanghavi joined via video link.
Patel said the aid reflects Gujarat’s commitment to its farmers, who keep the state’s economy running. The timely payments will help farmers rebuild and stabilize their livelihoods after widespread crop damage.
