‘Unconstitutional and illegal’: Imran Khan’s sisters, PTI members hold sit-in outside Adiala jail after meeting denied

Islamabad – Dec. 9 (LatestNewsX)
The sister of former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan, Aleema Khan, together with members of Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf (PTI), staged a sit‑in outside Adiala jail in Rawalpindi early on Tuesday. Prison officers again denied them an audience with the party’s founding chairman.
During a video statement taken on the way to the jail, Aleema complained that the state was acting unlawfully while insisting that PTI had never committed any crime. She said, “If they do operate illegally and we do our work according to the law, and if they are right and we are wrong, then that shows just how our system works.” She added that Imran Khan has been unable to see his personal physician for the past fourteen months and asked why a doctor can visit him while he is barred from meeting anyone else. “When Nawaz Sharif went to jail, a doctor was with him all day, counting his platelets,” she noted, questioning what sort of system this was.
Aleema and her supporters were moving toward the prison when they stopped at Gorakhpur Market on Adiala Road, about a kilometre southwest of the facility, before police halted them, reported Dawn. While seated near the barricade, she protested that the authorities were acting “unconstitutionally and illegally” and demanded to know why Imran Khan was being isolated and tortured. She accused the jail staff of violating the Constitution and the law.
Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023, facing a number of criminal cases that include alleged corruption and terrorism charges. He was removed from office in a no‑confidence vote in 2022.
On Dec. 2, Imran Khan’s sister Uzma Khanum stated that her brother’s health was “fine,” though he was still subjected to mental persecution. In a subsequent interview after a meeting at Adiala jail, Uzma described the conditions: “Imran Khan’s health is fine. However, he was very angry and said that they were subjecting him to mental torture. He is kept in his room throughout the day, with only a little time to go outside, and there is no communication with anyone.”
Just a few days later, on Dec. 4, the federal government barred Uzma Khan and others from visiting Imran Khan, citing an alleged violation of prison protocols. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said that the rules do not permit political discussions in the facility and that meetings are therefore prohibited.
Earlier this week, Khan filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court requesting permission to have his medical tests and examinations conducted at Shaukat Khanum Hospital on a regular basis—three days a week. The PTI founder’s legal team, led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, filed the application. The request includes monthly check‑ups, full access to a medical team, and the ability to conduct examinations in line with his health history and current condition. Khan also asked that a copy of the medical report be forwarded to his family and presented in court.
