Now, for the first time, this bustling informal settlement is set to host a dynamic showcase of strategy and youthful prowess through the Dharavi Schools Chess Championship 2025.
The event, backed by Nav Bharat Mega Developers Private Limited (NMDPL) and the Adani Group, will take place on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the District Sports Club. More than 200 students representing over 30 schools will battle it out in Junior and Senior brackets, celebrating chess, a sport renowned for sharpening the mind.
NMDPL sees the Dharavi redevelopment as more than just infrastructure; it’s a long‑term investment in people. The chess championship exemplifies this vision by fostering critical thinking, boosting self‑confidence, and opening doors for ambitious young minds.
True to the Adani Group’s commitment to grassroots sports, chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa will headline the event. He will run interactive sessions, exhibition matches, and talks about discipline, resilience, and focused thinking—principles that benefit both competitive play and everyday life.

After winning the Dharavi redevelopment contract in November 2022, the Adani Group embarked on one of India’s most ambitious urban renewal projects, laying the groundwork for community‑focused programs like this championship.
Selected participants will also have the chance to play a simultaneous exhibition against Grandmaster R Praggnandhaa this Friday.
