Germany clinched a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a convincing 6‑0 win over Slovakia, topping Group A in the European qualifiers.
The German side opened the scoring with a powerful header from Nick Woltemade. Serge Gnabry then doubled the lead, followed by two quick goals from Leroy Sane—two assists from Florian Wirtz pulled back the game well before half‑time.
In the second half, Ridle Baku finished a fluid team move to give Germany a comfortable cushion, and teenage debutant Assan Ouedraogo sealed the affair with a back‑heel finish from Sane.
Across the league, the Netherlands secured their World Cup berth with a 4‑0 victory over Lithuania in Amsterdam. Tijjani Reijnders opened the scoring from a turnover, and Cody Gakpo added a penalty. Xavi Simons and Donyell Malen then extended the lead, leaving no room for Lithuania to mount a comeback.
Slovakia, despite the loss, still have a chance to qualify through the 16‑team UEFA play‑off, while Poland secured second place in Group G after edging Malta.
In Group L, Croatia came from behind to defeat Montenegro at the very last minute, and the Czech Republic scored six goals against Gibraltar. Northern Ireland finished their preliminaries on a high note by beating Luxembourg in Group A.
Germany’s 19‑year World Cup streak continues, and the Netherlands join them as the next two qualifiers for the global tournament.
