Heavy Rains Flood Dehradun’s Famous Tapkeshwar Temple
Dehradun in Uttarakhand saw heavy downpours on Monday night, turning the Tamsa river into a raging force. The floods quickly swallowed up the iconic Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, one of the city’s top spiritual spots. Water rushed into the temple courtyard and climbed up to the Hanuman statue, but luckily, the main sanctum sanctorum stayed dry and protected.
Temple priest Acharya Bipin Joshi shared his worries with . "The river started surging from 5 AM, and soon the whole temple area was underwater," he said. "We haven’t seen anything like this in ages. Damage has hit several spots around here, but no one got hurt so far. Folks, please steer clear of rivers right now—the inner shrine is safe, and that’s the good news."
Local devotees couldn’t believe their eyes as the water invaded the cave temple. One resident recounted the scary moments: "It began around 4:45 AM when water seeped into the cave. Then levels shot up to 10-12 feet, even covering the Shivling. We grabbed a rope and climbed out just in time."
Another local pointed out the destruction from the powerful currents. "Tons of logs floated in with the flood, smashing into the temple and causing major damage," he told . "Everyone needs to stay back from the river—it’s too dangerous."
The rains didn’t stop at Dehradun. Over in Rishikesh, the Chandrabhaga river swelled beyond its banks since morning, with waters spilling onto the highway. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) jumped into action, rescuing three people stuck in the river. A few vehicles are still trapped in the floods, but teams are working hard to help.
