India’s forex reserves up by $1.03 billion to $687.26 billion, gold reserves jump

New Delhi: For the week ending December 5, India’s foreign exchange reserves increased by nearly $1.03 billion, totalling $687.26 billion, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported on Friday. Gold holdings rose by $1.188 billion to $106.984 billion, while Special Drawing Rights climbed $93 million to $18.721 billion.

The RBI keeps a close eye on the FX market and is prepared to intervene when necessary to maintain orderly trading conditions.

India’s foreign‑direct‑investment inflows have surged to record levels this year. In the first half of FY 2025‑26, FDI reached $50.36 billion, a 16 percent jump from the same period last year’s $43.37 billion—the highest first‑half figure ever, as the Parliament was briefed earlier this month. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, told the Lok Sabha that gross FDI has risen from just over $34 billion in 2012‑13 to more than $80 billion in 2024‑25.

Official data shows a robust rebound in the second quarter of the current fiscal year, with total FDI inflows up over 18 percent year‑on‑year to $35.18 billion for April‑September 2025.

“The recent trend in net FDI inflows is associated with increased repatriation/disinvestment and rising Overseas Direct Investment (ODI) outflows. The ODI outflow on account of liberalized ODI rules notified in 2022 is helping Indian entities to enhance their business footprints abroad enabling them to compete in the global market, adding to the strength of Indian economy in long run,” informed Prasada.

He added that the growing repatriation trend shows India is not only attracting foreign capital but also delivering strong returns, which enhances its reputation as a reliable investment destination. The government has leveraged free‑trade agreements to promote export diversification and attract investment, having signed 15 FTAs and 6 PTAs with its trading partners.
