Actor Vijay, the head of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has decided to pause all upcoming rallies for the next two weeks. This comes after a tragic stampede at his political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, claimed 41 lives, including women and children, on September 27.
The TVK party shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) in Tamil, saying the postponement is due to the deep grief over the loss of loved ones. They added that fresh details on rescheduled events will come soon, with Vijay’s full approval.
In the wake of the Karur stampede, authorities arrested two TVK members: Mathiyazhagan, the Karur West District Secretary, and MC Paun Raj, a local functionary. Both are now in judicial custody until October 14.
Vijay broke his silence on September 30 with a heartfelt statement. “I’ve never faced such heartbreak in my life. My heart aches, and I’m in deep pain,” he said. He explained that fans flock to his events out of love and affection, but this tragedy has left him shattered. Vijay promised to meet the victims’ families soon and offered his condolences to everyone affected.
He also urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to go easy on his party workers. “Chief Minister sir, please don’t target my team. I’m ready at home or in my office—take any action against me, but spare them,” Vijay pleaded.
Right after the stampede, Vijay left Karur quickly, worried that staying might spark more chaos and endanger lives. The TVK leader stressed his commitment to safety amid the ongoing investigation into the Tamil Nadu rally tragedy.
