Arunachal Minister visits Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand to study rehabilitation model

Itanagar – Myanmar’s Arunachal Pradesh minister, Dasanglu Pul, flew to the Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand on Monday. She was there to see how the big project handled land‑acquisition, resettlement and livelihood support for the people displaced when the dam was built.

The visit aimed to pick up best‑practice ideas that could be applied to the 1,200‑MW Kalai‑II hydroelectric plant planned for Anjaw district. “Tehri’s experience will help us map a socially responsible relief plan for Kalai‑II,” Pul said.

She met senior THDC India Ltd officials, the company that built Tehri, and local administrators. The team explained the steps taken to acquire land, rebuild livelihoods, and give people fair compensation. The talks were useful because Tehri is one of India’s tallest dam projects and a flagship example of large‑scale resettlement.

The Tehri Dam, a 260‑meter‑high rockfill and earth‑fill barrier on the Bhagirathi River, generates more than 1,000 MW of clean electricity. Beyond power, it has been praised for its extensive rehabilitation programs that helped thousands of families move and rebuild their lives.

Pul emphasized that Arunachal’s booming hydroelectric plans must go hand in hand with community welfare and cultural sensitivity. “We can’t grow progress if our people suffer,” she said.

The upcoming Kalai‑II plant on the Lohit River is expected to cost around ₹14,000 crore. Earlier this year, a public hearing hosted by the state pollution board let over 350 villagers from 33 communities ask for a strong relief and compensation strategy.

By studying how Tehri managed its resettlement, Pul hopes to create a balanced, transparent plan for Kalai‑II that protects local livelihoods while boosting Arunachal’s power supply. This visit marks an important step toward sustainable, people‑first development in the region.
