Chennai-based Puthiyathalaimurai says its flagship channel has gone dark on Tamil Nadu’s government‑run Arasu Cable network, a move the senior editor views as a threat to press freedom and democracy.
The blackout began on Friday, wiping out roughly 80 % of viewers who rely on Arasu for TV. V Prem Shanker, the channel’s senior executive editor, says the network’s technicians could not explain why the signal vanished. “We thought it was a technical glitch,” Shanker told . “We checked, called, emailed, but the cable officials gave no clear answer.”
By Monday, the channel had been removed from the entire SD bouquet offered by Arasu, leaving audiences in many districts unable to watch. Shanker called it a “near blackout” and warned that denying people information undermines their right to make informed choices and, in his words, “shakes the foundation of democracy.”
The editor said every attempt to resolve the issue—calls, emails, meetings—has so far been ignored. “We are just raising this at any platform we can,” Shanker said. “If this is an intentional attack on press freedom, it is an attack on democracy itself.”
Puthiyathalaimurai’s appeal highlights the growing tension between media outlets and state‑run cable services in Tamil Nadu, and raises concerns about the future of independent journalism in the region.
