Kolkata, Dec. 27 – Ashim Kumar Sarkar, the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator and folk‑music star from the Haringhata assembly seat in Nadia district, lodged a police complaint on Saturday after receiving a series of death‑threatening phone calls.
According to the filing at Chakdaha police station, Sarkar said that for several days he had been bombarded with calls threatening his life. He supplied the investigating officers with two mobile numbers from which the calls were received, urging authorities to identify the callers quickly and pursue legal action.
Sarkar explained to reporters that the intimidation followed comments he made about the 2014 lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment‑worker in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, as well as ongoing violence against Hindu minorities there. He claimed the callers first hurled vulgar insults before delivering the death threats. “Some people might not agree with what I said. However, there are legal forums to address that,” he told the press. “I strongly believe that an organised group is behind such threat calls given to me. I have already filed an official complaint in the matter. I hope that the police take necessary action in the matter.”
Sarkar had been speaking publicly about the situation in Bangladesh, even calling for a surgical strike by the Indian army similar to what was carried out against Pakistan. During a recent meeting near the Benapole‑Petrapole border in North 24 Parganas, he offered a “logical and informative” commentary on a particular religious scripture, after which he received the threatening calls. He reiterated that he was not seeking to stir conflict but was instead urging respect for minority rights.
