Marco Rubio claims ‘progress’ towards Ukraine-Russian peace deal — but says only Putin can end the war
Secretary State Marco Rubio told Fox News that he believes the United States has made some head‑way in the fight to bring an end to the almost‑four‑year conflict in Ukraine, but he also flagged that full resolution still lies ahead. Talking with host Sean Hannity, Rubio said the goal is to find a deal that protects Ukraine’s future and is acceptable to both sides. After Moscow rebuffed the Trump‑era cease‑fire proposal, the U.S. diplomat added that progress had been “made, but we’re not there yet.”
When reporters asked him how sure he was that peace would come, Rubio was candid: he refused to give a precise confidence level and pointed squarely at Russian President Vladimir Putin as the key figure who would ultimately decide the outcome. “It’s hard to gauge certainty because the choice is in Putin’s hands,” he said. “Not his advisors, but Putin.”
Rubio made it clear that, in his view, only Putin can end the war on the Russian side, and he reiterated that this is the main stumbling block to a full stop to fighting.
