Indicted Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick ripped for editing $109K diamond ring out of online post

Florida Representative Sheila Cherfilus‑McCormick found herself the target of a sharp‑eyed viral post on X after a $109,000, three‑carat yellow diamond ring that she allegedly bought with improper FEMA money was mysteriously removed from a holiday image.
The image in question was a Christmas‑season tweet that showed the South‑Florida Democrat’s official congressional portrait and a bare left hand. Many X users quickly pointed out that a square‑cut, 3‑carat “Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond” ring was missing.
When the platform’s “community note” was triggered, it read:
> “This portrait of Rep. Cherfilus‑McCormick has been altered to remove a ring off of her left hand that she bought using $109K of stolen FEMA funds.”
Cherfilus‑McCormick, who is now serving her third term, was indicted last month for allegedly taking $5 million in FEMA reimbursements meant for a COVID‑19 vaccination staffing contract and diverting the money to fund her 2021 congressional campaign. A House Ethics Committee investigation has been ongoing since December 2023.
According to prosecutors, the ring was purchased with a cashier’s check in September 2021—roughly two months after the alleged overpayments were made. Cherfilus‑McCormick’s brother, Edwin Cherfilus (51), the former chief of staff and accountant for their family‑owned health‑care business, is also charged in the scheme.
The indictment lists multiple offenses: theft of government funds, creating and accepting straw‑donor contributions, assisting in a false tax return, and money laundering. Each of those carries a separate conspiracy charge, and potential sentences could keep a guilty party in prison for decades.
The congresswoman has denied any wrongdoing. Her attorneys—David Oscar Markus, Margot Moss, and Melissa Madrigal—released a statement last month asserting that she is a committed public servant dedicated to her constituents and that “we will fight to clear her good name.”
Followers on X seized the moment to criticize both the portrait and the alleged ring. A chorus of users asked where the ring had gone, while others praised the “community note,” with comments such as “One helluva community note. You must be proud,” and “Community note is crazy.”
The New York Post has reached out to Cherfilus‑McCormick’s legal team and her congressional office for comments.
