BJP seeks NCW intervention on rising sexual assaults on girls in Karnataka

Bengaluru – Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka sent a urgent letter to the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday, raising alarm at the growing number of sexual assaults on girls in Karnataka. He wants the NCW to send a fact‑finding team to the state right away.
Ashoka said the situation in Karnataka is “a collapse of law and order.” Over the last four months, police recorded 979 cases of rape‑and‑assault against girls and minors. Bengaluru alone accounted for more than 114 cases. He added that women and children live in fear because the Congress‑led state government has not acted.
He cited several tragedies. One is the brutal rape and murder of a tribal girl in Mysuru, a migrant from Kalaburagi who was selling balloons during the Dussehra festival. Another is the suicide of a librarian in Kalaburagi, who reportedly endured repeated workplace harassment. “These incidents show a moral and administrative failure,” Ashoka said.
“In Karnataka, women are now more scared of the law’s absence than of crime itself,” he wrote. “The government’s silence and inaction are unacceptable.”
Ashoka’s letter asks the NCW to take suo moto action and set up a high‑level delegation. The team should visit major hubs such as Bengaluru, Mysuru and Kalaburagi. They should meet victims’ families, evaluate police response and gather a full report on the state’s shortcomings.
The leader of the Opposition also warned that the BJP will not stay silent. “The government must answer for this breakdown and act swiftly to secure safety for our women and children,” he said.
The NCW is expected to review the situation soon. Whether a fact‑finding team will arrive in Karnataka in the coming days remains to be seen. The state’s leaders and the public await the commission’s findings and a decisive plan to curb sexual violence across Karnataka.
