Upset over not getting US visa, woman doctor dies by suicide in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Nov 23 — A young woman doctor in Hyderabad ended her life after the U.S. denied her J‑1 visa, police officials said. Dr Rohini, who comes from Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, reportedly overdosed on sleeping pills at her home. The police opened a case and began an investigation. After the post‑mortem, her body was transferred to Guntur.

Her family says she had been planning a U.S. specialization for a year. Her mother, Lakshmi Rajyam, told reporters that Rohini was crushed when the U.S. tightened visa rules and her J‑1 application was rejected. While a bright student, she was deeply devastated that her application was denied even though she was already chosen for a residency program in the U.S.

Rohini’s brother, Sujan, recalled that she had been preparing for the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination and had completed three steps. She had also finished an observership in the U.S. and secured a residency spot at a college. She returned to India to sort out her visa status, but her hopes collapsed after the visa denial.

Rohini earned an MBBS in Russia a few years back and had gone to the U.S. for an observership to prep for residency. Once she was selected for a residency program in the U.S., she flew back to India to obtain the J‑1 visa necessary to continue. The recent tightening of visa norms by President Donald Trump for corporate employees and researchers made the process even tougher. She reportedly felt pressure from the U.S. college to start the residency soon, or her admission could be revoked. ms/khz
