Mumbai, Nov. 23 – LatestNewsX reports that Oscar‑winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor, who just attended the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, believes Indian filmmaking should lean more into local, authentic narratives.
She argues that a story grounded in its roots is more likely to resonate worldwide, and she praised India’s official Oscar candidate, ‘Homebound’, noting its recent release.
In an interview with LatestNewsX, Kapoor explained, “‘Homebound’ had to be released urgently because films that come back from festivals have a cut‑off period. There was meticulous planning involved in choosing the release date. A submission deadline fell in September, so we had to launch it at the last minute. But I’m not here to weigh in on box‑office performance; I think audiences will appreciate it. ‘Homebound’ is a beautiful film that has already screened at Cannes and Toronto, and Martin Scorsese is presenting it. One of the best studios in India produced it and Neeraj Ghaywan directed it. It’s truly remarkable and deserves all the acclaim.”
She added, “I believe films like ‘Kantara’ and ‘Manjummel Boys’ are also excellent. They are distinctly rooted and can thrive on the international stage. I expect them to do exceptionally well abroad and to break new ground. However, in Hindi cinema we still need to pursue more grounded storytelling.”
The 56th IFFI is now in full swing in Goa, bringing together over 240 films from 81 countries. The festival boasts 13 world premieres, as well as international and Asian debuts. Its opening ceremony will feature a spectacular parade along the Mandovi River, marking a unique departure from tradition.
